Technically speaking, these Opels from the early ’70s—the “Rekord II,” as it was called in advertisements—were hardly innovative. Visually, however, the Rekord D and the Commodore B successfully brought this model into the ’70s. Clean lines were now in vogue, and the striking front end with its “shark-nose” design quickly won over new fans in the upper mid-size segment. With a vinyl roof, light brown velour interior, automatic transmission, and a tow hitch, you could really impress your neighbors; even today, the occasional passerby gazes longingly at a Commodore driving by—even the 4-door sedan with the underpowered 115PS base engine...
