Rear Axle Oil Fill 'Without Differential Lock' for Opel Rear-Wheel-Drive Vehicles, Motul Gear 300
Actually, Mr. Opel never intended for us to change the rear axle oil on our rear-wheel-drive models. But then again, he didn’t anticipate that we’d still be driving these old beasts around forty or fifty years later and still having fun with them. To make sure that fun doesn’t fade, it’s a good idea to keep this oil change in mind. To put it simply, the old sludge has to go, and after cleaning the housing, you should fill it with the highest-quality golden-yellow lubricant :-)
Until now, we’ve always used original oil for the rear axle. However, it’s often been hard to find in recent years. As a result, we’ve now selected one of the best oils available on the open market to fill our rear axles accordingly.
Specifically, that means we now have 1.25 liters of Motul Gear 300 oil here:
- 1 liter in the original container
- 0.25 liters in a 0.5-liter PET bottle
- Filling tube for direct filling
This fill is suitable for all axles WITHOUT a limited-slip differential; of course, we also have the appropriate complete fill for axles with a limited-slip differential.

You’ll need a new lid gasket if you’ve removed the lid. Which I hope you have, because the inside can look pretty gross at times. So put a container underneath, grab a can of brake cleaner, and let’s get to work! After cleaning, it’ll shine again like Mom’s best dishes… ;-)
